Apple recently announced that the legacy mobile device management (MDM) software update commands will be deprecated with the release of the new operating systems later this year. To align with this change, Intune will end support soon after the Apple OS release for the following MDM-based workloads:
- iOS update policies
- macOS update policies
- Software update settings within iOS or macOS Device restrictions template
- Software update settings in the iOS or macOS settings catalog under 'Restrictions'
- Software update payload and settings in the macOS settings catalog
- Per-device macOS software updates report
- iOS update installation failures report
- macOS update installation failures report
The same functionality is available using declarative device management (DDM) settings. For more details, review the blog: Support tip: Move to declarative device management for Apple software updates
How this will affect your organization:
If you are using Intune to manage iOS, iPadOS, and macOS software updates, you will need to update your workflows to use the newer equivalent DDM settings and reporting to manage updates. If you do not update your policies to use DDM, the devices may fail to update after this change.
What you need to do to prepare:
Review your software update management settings and move to DDM before the upcoming OS release. Simply create your DDM update policies using the settings catalog, devices will ignore MDM update settings when DDM update settings are being enforced.
